U.S. President Donald Trump said on Sunday that a Gaza deal aimed at securing the release of hostages held by Hamas could be reached soon. His comments followed what he described as a “last warning” to the Palestinian militant group, urging them to accept the U.S.-backed proposal.
Under the framework presented by the United States, Hamas would release all remaining hostages on the first day of a ceasefire. In exchange, Israel would free thousands of Palestinian prisoners. The truce would also allow further talks to address outstanding issues. Israeli officials have reportedly accepted the plan, clearing the way for progress if Hamas agrees.
Speaking to reporters after attending the U.S. Open tennis tournament, Trump expressed optimism about the ongoing negotiations. “I think we’re going to have a deal on Gaza very soon,” he said, adding that his administration is determined to secure the safe return of all hostages, whether alive or deceased.
Hamas confirmed that it had received the U.S. proposal through mediators in Qatar and Egypt. While the group indicated it was open to reviewing the plan, it reiterated its long-standing condition that any agreement must ensure a complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza.
The discussions come as Gaza continues to endure heavy bombardment and severe humanitarian distress. Large parts of the territory remain in ruins, with families displaced and essential supplies such as food, water, and medical aid running critically low. Aid organizations have called for a humanitarian ceasefire to provide relief to civilians.
Although no final agreement has yet been announced, Trump’s remarks mark the strongest indication so far of possible progress in negotiations. If implemented, the deal could bring about a large-scale prisoner exchange and a temporary pause in fighting. For the families of hostages and the civilians of Gaza, the hope remains that words will soon turn into action.
