The United States is reviewing a request from Ukraine to supply long-range Tomahawk missiles, a move aimed at strengthening Kyiv’s defense against Russian advances. The confirmation came from Vice President JD Vance, who noted that discussions are ongoing within the administration.

Ukraine has repeatedly sought advanced long-range weapons from Western allies to strike back at Russian positions and logistics hubs. While the US and NATO partners have already supplied systems like HIMARS and Patriot defenses, Kyiv argues that Tomahawk cruise missiles would give it the ability to disrupt Russian operations more effectively.

Speaking to reporters, Vice President Vance said the US government is “considering the request very carefully.” He added that any decision would weigh both Ukraine’s defense needs and the wider security consequences. “We are committed to helping Ukraine defend itself, but each step must be measured with responsibility,” Vance explained.

Tomahawk missiles, known for their precision and range of over 1,000 kilometers, have been used extensively by the US military in past conflicts. If approved, their delivery to Ukraine would represent one of the most significant escalations of military aid since the war began, potentially allowing Kyiv to target deeper into occupied territories.

The potential transfer has sparked debate in policy circles. Supporters argue that advanced weapons are critical to leveling the battlefield for Ukraine, while critics warn that providing long-range missiles could increase tensions with Moscow. European allies are closely watching Washington’s deliberations, as any move could reshape NATO’s military involvement in the conflict.

For now, no timeline has been announced for a decision. The Biden administration has maintained that aid to Ukraine will continue, but each new weapons request undergoes extensive review. Ukraine’s request for Tomahawks adds another layer to the ongoing debate over how far the US and its allies should go in arming Kyiv.
