President Donald Trump has announced that the U.S. government will not distribute federal food aid during the ongoing government shutdown, marking a significant escalation in the political standoff that has now stretched beyond a month.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated that Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, which help millions of low-income Americans buy groceries, will only resume “once the Radical Left Democrats open up the government.” The message immediately drew criticism from lawmakers and hunger relief advocates who warned that the move could deepen financial hardship for vulnerable families.

The shutdown, now in its 35th day, has halted funding for several agencies and programs. At least 7 million Americans depend on SNAP to cover basic food needs each month. According to reports, the Department of Agriculture has not authorized the release of an emergency fund that could temporarily sustain benefits, though a smaller $450 million allocation has been approved for a separate nutrition program.

A federal court in Rhode Island recently ordered the administration to ensure partial or full SNAP payments by early November, citing “irreparable harm” to households relying on the assistance. Despite that ruling, the administration has maintained that no benefits will be issued until Congress approves funding to reopen the government.

Critics say the decision breaks with precedent, as previous shutdowns allowed SNAP payments to continue through temporary measures. Food banks and community organizations nationwide are preparing for a surge in demand, urging donors and local governments to help bridge the gap.

The White House insists that the President’s position is about fiscal responsibility and pressuring lawmakers to negotiate. However, Democrats have accused the administration of using “hunger as a political weapon.”

As the impasse continues, millions of Americans are left uncertain about how they will afford food in the coming weeks, a stark reminder of how deeply the shutdown’s consequences have rippled into everyday lives.
