U.S. President Donald Trump has claimed that India has agreed to stop purchasing Russian oil, marking a potential shift in the energy relationship between New Delhi and Moscow. Trump made the remarks during a press briefing in Washington on Wednesday, following discussions with Indian officials.
Speaking to reporters, Trump said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi understands the global situation very well. India will do what’s right. They have agreed to stop buying Russian oil.” He added that the move aligns with global efforts to curb Russia’s revenue amid the ongoing Ukraine conflict.
India Yet to Issue an Official Statement
As of Thursday morning, the Government of India has not issued an official response or confirmation of Trump’s statement. New Delhi has consistently maintained that its oil imports are guided by national interest and market stability, emphasizing its commitment to energy security.
India remains one of the largest importers of Russian crude, which has provided the country with discounted prices since the onset of Western sanctions on Moscow in 2022. Over the past two years, India’s refiners have become key buyers of Russian Urals crude, helping balance domestic supply and control fuel prices.
U.S.-India Energy Diplomacy
Trump’s statement comes at a time when Washington has been urging key allies and trading partners to reduce economic ties with Russia, particularly in the energy sector. The U.S. has previously praised India’s role in balancing global energy markets while simultaneously calling for greater alignment with Western sanctions policies.
Energy experts note that a reduction in Russian oil imports by India could have significant implications for both countries trade ties and the global oil market.
If confirmed, the decision would represent a diplomatic win for Washington and could further strengthen U.S.-India strategic relations, particularly in trade, defense, and technology cooperation.
The claim, however, has yet to be independently verified by Indian officials or energy regulators.
