Reddit, one of the world’s most popular social media platforms, faced a major global outage on November 4, 2025, leaving thousands of users unable to access the site or app. Reports of the issue surged across regions, particularly in the United States and India, where users complained about slow loading, login failures, and blank pages.

According to Downdetector, the outage began around 4:27 AM PST and quickly gained momentum, with over 20,000 problem reports filed within an hour. Nearly half of the complaints were related to the Reddit website, while around 44% came from mobile app users, and the rest were tied to connection or server errors.

Reddit’s technical team later confirmed that the disruption stemmed from a “degraded performance” issue in its backend systems. Initial investigations linked the problem to an ongoing Amazon Web Services (AWS) malfunction affecting multiple cloud regions, including US-East-1, US-West-1, and US-West-2. AWS, which powers large portions of Reddit’s infrastructure, was simultaneously experiencing service instability across several global platforms.

The company stated that engineers had identified the issue and were deploying a fix, though it did not specify when full functionality would be restored. Reddit advised users to avoid repeatedly refreshing or logging in during the fix process, as that could worsen the load on the servers.

This incident follows a smaller outage reported on October 20, 2025, which affected a few thousand users. However, the current disruption was far more severe, underscoring how dependent major online platforms have become on cloud service providers like AWS.

By late afternoon, Reddit reported “partial recovery,” but some users continued to face slower performance. The company assured its community that full services would resume soon and promised to review the cause to prevent future incidents.

The widespread outage serves as another reminder of the fragility of cloud-based systems, where even a minor disruption in one region can ripple across the global digital ecosystem.
