A powerful earthquake measuring 7.6 in magnitude struck off the southern Philippines on Friday, according to data from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS). The quake’s epicenter was located off the coast of Mindanao, the country’s second-largest island. It occurred at a depth of around 30 kilometers beneath the seabed, making it a shallow and potentially damaging tremor.

The tremor was felt across several provinces in southern Mindanao, including Davao Oriental, General Santos, and Sarangani. Residents in nearby areas reported intense shaking that lasted for several seconds, prompting evacuations from homes and offices. Power interruptions were also reported in some coastal towns following the quake.

PHIVOLCS initially issued a tsunami warning for coastal communities in Mindanao and nearby islands, urging residents to move to higher ground as a precaution. The advisory covered areas along the Davao Gulf and the eastern coastline. Authorities later stated that monitoring would continue to ensure public safety as aftershocks are expected in the coming days.

Local disaster management teams were immediately deployed to assess the situation and inspect infrastructure, particularly bridges, schools, and hospitals. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) coordinated with regional offices to track reports of damage and ensure that emergency services remained operational.

The Philippines lies along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a region known for frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity. The country experiences hundreds of tremors each year, though most are too weak to cause damage. However, major quakes such as this one highlight the ongoing need for preparedness in seismically active areas.

As of Friday evening, PHIVOLCS reported no immediate casualties or severe damage, but assessment and monitoring operations are ongoing. Authorities continue to advise residents to stay alert and follow official safety updates.
