Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a phone conversation with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on September 10, 2025. During the call, he thanked her for Italy’s support in advancing the long-negotiated India–EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Modi said Italy’s backing has been vital in building momentum toward the deal, which aims to boost trade, investment, and market access between India and the European Union.

Both leaders reaffirmed the importance of the India–Italy Strategic Partnership, which covers a wide range of sectors. Their discussions included investment, defence, science and technology, space cooperation, and counter-terrorism. These align with the 2025–29 Joint Action Plan signed earlier this year to deepen bilateral cooperation.

The two prime ministers also exchanged views on major international issues. They spoke about the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, stressing the importance of peace, stability, and diplomatic engagement. Meloni reiterated Italy’s support for India’s role in fostering dialogue at the global level.

India–EU Trade Talks Progress

The India–EU FTA negotiations have made significant progress in recent months. According to Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, over 60% of the chapters have already been finalized, with the remaining sections under discussion. India is pushing to agree by the end of this year, aiming to strengthen its economic integration with Europe.

Prime Minister Meloni also expressed support for the India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEEC), a major infrastructure initiative designed to improve trade routes and connectivity between South Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. Both leaders agreed that such projects would not only strengthen economic links but also bring stability to the wider region.

The call highlights growing alignment between New Delhi and Rome on trade, connectivity, and global peace efforts. With the India–EU trade deal moving forward and Italy’s continued support, both countries are preparing for a stronger partnership that balances economic growth with shared global responsibilities.
