A man was shot and killed by NYPD officers on Thursday evening after he allegedly threatened several people and later exchanged gunfire with police in Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Authorities say the incident unfolded across multiple locations, putting residents, hospital staff, and officers at serious risk.

According to NYPD officials, the chaos began around 7 p.m. inside the elevator of a residential building when the suspect pointed a gun at another person without provocation. After leaving the building, the man then walked into a nearby deli, where he displayed the firearm again and made alarming statements, including a threat that he intended to “shoot up” a hospital.

The man proceeded to Mount Sinai Hospital, placed his weapon on the ground briefly outside the entrance, then reentered the facility, where he confronted an on-duty police officer working security inside the hospital. A physical struggle occurred before the suspect managed to retrieve his gun once more.

Responding officers rushed to the scene after hospital staff alerted police. When the man exited the building and fired at officers, NYPD members returned fire, hitting him. He was taken to the hospital, the same one where the confrontation began, and later pronounced dead.

Police have not yet identified the suspect, and investigators are still working to determine his motive and whether mental health issues played a role in his actions.

Several officers involved in the confrontation were taken to the hospital for evaluation, though none suffered serious injuries. NYPD Chief of Patrol Philip Rivera called the situation “extremely dangerous,” noting that the man moved quickly between public spaces, a residential building, a deli, and a major hospital, forcing officers to make immediate, life-saving decisions to protect the public.

The hospital remained on high alert for several hours, though officials confirmed that patients and staff were safe. The investigation is ongoing, and the NYPD is reviewing body-camera footage and interviewing witnesses to piece together the full timeline.
