A Houston Police Department (HPD) officer was injured Friday morning following a traffic collision on Interstate 45 North near West Road, causing a major traffic disruption across north Houston.
According to HPD, the crash occurred shortly before 10 a.m., when the officer’s patrol vehicle was involved in a multi-vehicle collision in the northbound lanes. Emergency crews and law enforcement officers responded immediately to assist at the scene.
All northbound lanes of I-45 were initially closed as investigators examined the crash site and medical personnel treated the injured officer. By around 11:30 a.m., two left lanes were reopened to ease congestion, though the right lane and shoulder remained blocked for several hours.
Authorities said the injured officer was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. HPD officials confirmed that the officer’s injuries were non-life-threatening, and they are expected to recover.
Police have not yet released the cause of the collision. The HPD Vehicular Crimes Division is leading the investigation to determine what led to the crash and whether weather, speed, or driver distraction played a role.
“We’re grateful our officer is stable,” said an HPD spokesperson. “We’re continuing to review the evidence and vehicle data to understand what happened.”
The incident caused major delays across I-45, stretching several miles back toward downtown Houston. Commuters were advised to avoid the area and use alternate routes through the Hardy Toll Road or Highway 59.
Tow trucks were later called to remove the damaged vehicles, and normal traffic flow resumed gradually by early afternoon.
The incident highlights ongoing risks for law enforcement officers who patrol busy highways daily. HPD reminded motorists to slow down, move over, and stay alert when approaching emergency vehicles or flashing lights on the roadside.
