Palestinian media outlets have reported that Israeli forces detained senior Hamas leader Jamal al-Tawil during a raid on his home in the city of al-Bireh, located near Ramallah in the occupied West Bank. The arrest took place amid ongoing security operations in the Palestinian territories.

According to reports, al-Tawil was first arrested at the age of 16 and has since spent more than 20 years in Israeli prisons over multiple periods of detention. Throughout his political career, he has been considered one of the senior figures of Hamas in the West Bank, often detained during waves of arrests targeting Palestinian political activists.

Al-Tawil’s most recent release took place on February 8, as part of a prisoner exchange arrangement that followed the second ceasefire in Gaza earlier this year. That agreement saw several Palestinian detainees freed in exchange for Israeli captives, under mediation from regional and international parties.

The arrest of al-Tawil comes as Israeli forces continue to carry out regular raids across the West Bank, citing security operations against Hamas and other Palestinian factions. Palestinian human rights groups have repeatedly criticized the scale and frequency of these raids, calling for adherence to international humanitarian law.

The latest detention adds to tensions in the region following months of conflict and ceasefire negotiations. While Israeli authorities have issued no official statement on al-Tawil’s detention, Palestinian sources have described it as part of ongoing arrests targeting prominent political figures and activists.

Jamal al-Tawil’s repeated arrests and long periods of imprisonment highlight the continuing cycle of detentions and exchanges that define the political landscape between Israel and Palestinian factions. His case remains emblematic of the broader issue of political detentions within the ongoing conflict.
