Copenhagen: Denmark Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen has summoned the top U.S. diplomat in Copenhagen after intelligence reports suggested that individuals linked to U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration may have engaged in covert operations to encourage Greenland’s secession from Denmark.
Intelligence Reports Spark Summons
According to Danish intelligence, at least three U.S. nationals were mentioned in the reports as being tied to alleged influence efforts. Officials did not publicly release the names of those individuals. The reports raised concerns in Copenhagen that outside powers continue to focus on Greenland’s political status.
Foreign Minister Rasmussen said Denmark was not surprised by attempts from external actors to influence the Kingdom’s future. “Foreign actors continue to show an interest in Greenland and its position in the Kingdom of Denmark,” Rasmussen noted. He added, “It is therefore not surprising if we experience outside attempts to influence the future of the Kingdom in the time ahead.”
Why Greenland Is Important
Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, holds major strategic value due to its location in the Arctic and its untapped natural resources. The territory has been the subject of international attention before, including when former U.S. President Trump expressed interest in buying Greenland in 2019 is a proposal that was quickly dismissed by Denmark.
Neither the Danish Foreign Ministry nor the public broadcaster DR provided the names of the individuals flagged in the intelligence reports. The lack of disclosure reflects the sensitivity of the issue, as Denmark balances protecting its sovereignty with maintaining diplomatic ties to the United States.
The summoning of the U.S. envoy underscores Denmark’s determination to safeguard Greenland against covert influence efforts. As global powers continue to eye the Arctic, Denmark has signaled that it will respond firmly to any attempts to interfere with Greenland’s position in the Kingdom.
