Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has said he would not rule out the presence of Canadian troops in Ukraine as part of future security guarantees. Speaking during his visit to Kyiv, Carney stressed that discussions are ongoing between Ukraine and its allies about a long-term framework for stability and defense.
Security Guarantees Under Discussion
According to Carney, Canada is working closely with Ukraine and other partners to design a framework that would ensure Ukraine’s security beyond the immediate conflict. While no final decisions have been made, the Prime Minister said Canada is open to considering options that may include a physical presence of Canadian forces in specific roles.
The discussions form part of wider talks among Ukraine’s allies on how to support the country with both military aid and future guarantees once the war ends.
Canada’s Support to Ukraine So Far
Since the conflict began, Canada has been a strong backer of Ukraine, providing financial assistance, weapons, and training for Ukrainian forces. Thousands of Ukrainian soldiers have already been trained under Canadian-led programs in Europe, highlighting Ottawa’s commitment to Kyiv’s defense.
Carney’s remarks suggest that Canada may be prepared to take on a deeper role in Ukraine’s security arrangements if agreed upon through allied frameworks.
Ukraine has been pushing for firm guarantees from Western allies as part of its bid for long-term stability. While NATO membership remains a subject of debate, countries like Canada, the US, and European allies are exploring ways to provide binding security commitments short of full alliance membership.
Carney emphasized that any decision will be taken collectively and in consultation with both Ukraine and Canada’s allies. He added that Canada remains committed to standing with Ukraine for as long as necessary.
