Former U.S. National Security Advisor John Bolton appeared in a Maryland federal court on Thursday after being indicted on charges of mishandling classified information. The indictment is the latest in a series of cases involving senior figures who have publicly clashed with former U.S. President Donald Trump.

The U.S. Department of Justice confirmed that Bolton faces 18 counts related to the unauthorized disclosure of classified material to family members between 2018 and 2019. Prosecutors allege that Bolton kept “diary-like” notes during his tenure as National Security Advisor, which contained sensitive details about U.S. intelligence operations and foreign policy methods.

According to the indictment, between 2019 and 2021, a hacker believed to be linked to Iran allegedly accessed Bolton’s personal email and extracted classified government data. The Justice Department claims this incident exposed critical information about U.S. security activities, further aggravating the charges against him.

Bolton surrendered voluntarily and appeared before the Greenbelt federal courthouse in Maryland on October 17. During his court appearance, he denied all allegations, asserting that the Justice Department had been “weaponized” against political opponents.

In a written statement following his court appearance, Bolton said, “These charges are not just about my focus on me or my diary entries, but his intensive effort to intimidate his opponents.”

John Bolton, a long-time conservative figure and one of Trump’s most vocal critics, served as National Security Advisor from 2018 to 2019. His tenure ended after disagreements over U.S. foreign policy, particularly concerning Iran and North Korea. Since leaving the administration, Bolton has been an outspoken critic of Trump’s leadership style and national security decisions.

Bolton’s legal team has requested a detailed review of the indictment, maintaining that none of the alleged disclosures were intentional. The court is expected to schedule a preliminary hearing in the coming weeks.
