Chicago police are investigating a string of early-morning break-ins that targeted several small businesses in the Hyde Park neighborhood on Tuesday, leaving owners shaken and residents concerned about rising property crimes. Five separate shops on East 55th and East 56th streets were hit within just a few hours, suggesting the same suspects may be responsible.

According to police, the first three break-ins happened between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. in the 1600 block of East 55th Street. A fourth incident was reported around 3 a.m. just one block south, in the 1600 block of East 56th Street. The final break-in occurred after 5 a.m., again on East 55th. In each case, the intruders forced their way inside by damaging or breaking the business’s front door before quickly fleeing the scene.

Detectives say that property was confirmed stolen during the break-in on East 56th Street, though it is still unclear whether items were taken from the other locations. The targeted businesses have not yet been publicly identified, but police say the incidents appear similar in method and timing, making it likely they are connected.

Residents of Hyde Park, known for its mix of small shops, restaurants, and longtime local businesses, woke up to boarded-up storefronts and broken glass. Some neighbors said they were alarmed to hear that several businesses along the same corridor were hit in such a short timeframe. Others expressed frustration, saying that small neighborhood shops already face economic challenges and do not need another setback.

Police presence increased throughout the day as investigators reviewed surveillance footage, interviewed business owners, and searched the surrounding area for evidence. No arrests have been made, and Area One detectives are leading the investigation.

Business associations in Hyde Park are urging shop owners to check their security cameras and share any footage that could help identify the suspects. Police are also encouraging anyone who may have been driving or walking in the area during those early hours to contact detectives.

As the investigation continues, the break-ins serve as another reminder of the pressures facing local businesses. Many owners hope a quick arrest will restore a sense of safety in a community that prides itself on its welcoming, neighborhood feel.
