The latest round of trade negotiations between India and the European Union (EU) ended without significant progress, drawing concern from EU officials. European Union envoy Herve Delphin described the outcome as a “missed opportunity,” stressing the need for both sides to move faster on reaching a Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

Talks over a comprehensive trade deal between India and the EU have been ongoing for nearly two decades, with multiple rounds of discussions failing to deliver a breakthrough. While both parties acknowledge the potential of such an agreement, differences remain over market access, tariffs, and regulatory standards.

The EU is one of India’s largest trading partners, with bilateral trade in goods reaching over €120 billion in 2023. Despite this strong relationship, officials note that unresolved issues are slowing down progress, especially in critical areas like digital trade, sustainability standards, and agricultural access.

Speaking after the latest round, envoy Delphin said the lack of progress risks undermining the momentum built in previous sessions. “We cannot afford to let these talks drag on indefinitely. This is about creating opportunities for businesses and workers on both sides,” he remarked.

For the EU, a free trade pact with India is not only about economics but also about diversifying trade partnerships in Asia, especially as global supply chains shift in the wake of geopolitical tensions.

India has taken a cautious approach, emphasizing the need to protect domestic industries while balancing international commitments. New Delhi is particularly focused on ensuring fair terms for its agricultural sector, data governance, and access to the European services market.

Officials from India reiterated that talks are ongoing and that progress, even if slow, reflects the complexity of the issues.

Both sides remain committed to continuing discussions, but the envoy’s remarks highlight growing impatience in Brussels. Without a quicker resolution, experts warn that businesses may lose confidence in the timeline of the deal.

As negotiations continue, the India-EU FTA remains one of the most significant but challenging trade agreements on the global stage.
