A new analysis from the Center for American Progress (CAP) reveals that residents in 49 U.S. states and Washington, D.C., are facing rising electricity and natural gas bills. The increase is linked to several structural and economic factors, including aging energy infrastructure, volatile gas prices, and the growing energy demands of data centers and industries.

The findings show that rising utility costs are no longer a regional issue; they have become a nationwide concern affecting both urban and rural communities.

Experts point to a mix of reasons behind the spike in household energy costs. Utilities across the country are raising rates to fund critical upgrades to power grids, pipelines, and transmission systems that have not kept pace with modern demand. Many states are also investing heavily in clean energy transitions, which require large upfront spending.

Another factor is natural gas market volatility. Fluctuations in global supply and domestic production have made gas prices unpredictable, directly impacting the electricity bills of millions of Americans, since natural gas fuels a large portion of U.S. power generation.

The report highlights a new challenge are the rapid expansion of data centers, artificial intelligence facilities, and cloud computing infrastructure. These operations consume massive amounts of electricity, putting additional strain on local grids and forcing utilities to expand capacity faster than expected.

As a result, energy demand in some states has surged by more than 10 percent over the last two years, pushing rates even higher.

For ordinary consumers, the effect is clear: higher monthly bills and fewer options to reduce costs. Low-income households are particularly vulnerable, as they already spend a higher percentage of their income on energy expenses.

Policy experts warn that unless stronger cost-control and infrastructure strategies are adopted, energy affordability could become one of the nation’s biggest household challenges in the coming years.
