U.S. President Donald Trump has once again claimed that he played a key role in preventing a war between India and Pakistan, this time crediting U.S. trade tariffs as a major factor in easing tensions between the two nations.

Speaking during a campaign event, Trump said his administration’s economic pressure on both countries helped avert what he described as a “serious military conflict.” He stated, “We stopped a war between India and Pakistan. People don’t know that. It was because of the tariffs they worked.”

Past Remarks on India-Pakistan Relations

This is not the first time Trump has referred to his involvement in India-Pakistan relations. During his presidency in 2019, he had publicly offered to mediate between the two countries over the Kashmir issue, a statement that drew immediate clarification from New Delhi, which maintained that all matters with Pakistan are bilateral.

Trump’s latest comments revive his earlier claims but add a new angle that trade measures, not diplomacy alone, were instrumental in preventing escalation.

The reference appears to relate to the 2019 period following the Pulwama terror attack and subsequent Balakot airstrikes, when tensions between India and Pakistan reached one of their highest points in recent years. At that time, the U.S. had imposed several trade restrictions, including the suspension of India’s Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) status, citing concerns over market access.

While there is no official record linking U.S. tariffs to de-escalation efforts, Washington had urged both sides to show restraint and engage in dialogue.

Neither New Delhi nor Islamabad has commented on Trump’s latest remarks. Indian officials have consistently maintained that external mediation is not required in matters concerning Pakistan, particularly those involving cross-border security issues.

Trump, meanwhile, continues to reference his foreign policy decisions as examples of his administration’s “tough but effective” approach. His latest remarks have drawn global attention ahead of his continued political campaigning in the United States.
