The entertainment world is mourning the loss of Cleto Escobedo III, the longtime bandleader of Jimmy Kimmel Live! and a cherished childhood friend of host Jimmy Kimmel. Escobedo passed away on November 11, 2025, at the age of 59. His death certificate has now revealed the heartbreaking combination of medical conditions that led to his passing.
According to official documents, Escobedo died from cardiogenic shock, a severe and sudden failure of the heart’s ability to pump blood. This life-threatening condition was the immediate cause of death. However, the report also confirms that several serious underlying issues contributed to his rapid decline.
Escobedo had been suffering from chronic liver damage caused by alcoholic cirrhosis, along with kidney disease, pneumonia, and a weakened immune system. Medical examiners also listed vasodilatory shock, sepsis, and disseminated intravascular coagulation, a dangerous condition involving widespread blood-clotting, among the complications. Together, these conditions created a cascade of organ failures that doctors were unable to reverse.
Escobedo was not just a musician on television; he was a key part of the spirit and energy of Jimmy Kimmel Live! He led the house band, Cleto and the Cletones, from the show’s premiere in 2003, becoming a familiar face to millions of late-night viewers. His warm personality, smooth saxophone performances, and easy on-screen presence helped shape the tone of the show for more than two decades.
Jimmy Kimmel paid tribute shortly after his friend’s death, describing Escobedo as “a great friend, father, son, musician, and man.” The two had known each other since childhood, growing up together in Las Vegas before working side-by-side for over 20 years on national television.
Fans and fellow musicians continue to share memories of Escobedo online, celebrating not only his musical talent but also his kindness and generosity behind the scenes. Upcoming episodes of Jimmy Kimmel Live! are expected to include special tributes honoring his life and legacy.
Escobedo leaves behind a powerful imprint on late-night television, one built on friendship, music, and years of joyful performance.
