ChatGPT Can Now Make UPI Payments and Order Groceries from BigBasket

In a major step toward integrating conversational AI with real-world payments, OpenAI’s ChatGPT can now facilitate Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions and even place grocery orders directly with BigBasket. The integration is being rolled out through a collaboration between Razorpay, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), and OpenAI.

How the Integration Works

With this new feature, users can now interact with ChatGPT and complete transactions within the same chat. For example, when a user types, “I need to buy groceries,” ChatGPT can automatically connect with BigBasket, generate a shopping list, and facilitate the payment using UPI, all without leaving the chat window.

The UPI process is powered by Razorpay, one of India’s leading fintech firms, which ensures secure and instant payment handling through NPCI’s digital infrastructure. This setup allows ChatGPT to move beyond information delivery and into real-time action and execution for daily tasks.

A First for Conversational AI in India

This integration marks a milestone in India’s rapidly growing AI and fintech ecosystem. It is the first instance of a global AI platform being linked with India’s indigenous payment system, enabling seamless commerce through voice or text-based interactions.

Industry observers note that India’s robust digital payment infrastructure, driven by the adoption of UPI, has made it an ideal testing ground for AI-driven commerce experiments.

Apart from grocery shopping, the feature could extend to various everyday transactions, such as paying bills, booking cabs, or ordering meals, once partner integrations expand. For now, the BigBasket collaboration demonstrates how AI chatbots are evolving into transaction-ready digital assistants.
