A 15-year-old has been charged in connection with a deadly hit-and-run crash that occurred early Sunday morning in southeast Houston, according to the Houston Police Department. The incident happened just before 1 a.m. in the 7000 block of Kassarine Pass, where a large gathering was reportedly taking place at the time.
Investigators say a pickup truck was traveling along the street when the vehicle’s side mirror struck a woman who was standing near the road. Moments later, the truck hit a man who was also in the roadway. The driver did not stop after the collision and left the scene.
The man who was struck suffered serious injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died. The woman received a non-life-threatening arm injury. The victims’ names have not yet been released, and authorities are working to notify family members.
Police later located the vehicle and identified the driver as a 15-year-old juvenile. Because of his age, his identity has not been released under state law. He has been charged with Failure to Stop and Render Aid Causing Death and Failure to Stop and Render Aid Causing Bodily Injury. The teen was taken into custody and is now being processed through the juvenile court system.
Investigators have not yet released details regarding how the teen obtained access to the vehicle or whether an adult was present at the time. Detectives are continuing to review surveillance video, interview witnesses, and gather additional evidence to determine the circumstances leading up to the crash.
Residents in the area expressed concern following the incident, noting that gatherings and late-night activity along Kassarine Pass have raised safety worries in the past. Police are encouraging anyone who saw the crash or has video footage to contact HPD’s Hit-and-Run Division or Crime Stoppers.
Authorities emphasized the importance of staying at the scene after any collision, saying that leaving the scene can turn an accident into a crime with severe consequences.
