Monsoons in India hit hard flooded streets, cars floating like boats, and breakdowns everywhere. The big question that comes up every rainy season: If my car gets submerged in water, will insurance cover it?

Third Party vs. Comprehensive Insurance

  • Third-Party Insurance – This is the basic plan, and it only covers damage you cause to another person’s car or property. If your car is submerged, this plan won’t help.
  • Comprehensive Insurance – This is the all-rounder plan. It covers natural disasters like floods, storms, or heavy rains. If your car is damaged due to waterlogging, this is the plan that saves you.

Engine Protection is a Big Deal

Even if you have comprehensive insurance, engine damage is often not fully covered. Water entering the engine (hydrostatic lock) can totally ruin your car. To protect against this, you need an Engine Protection Add On. Without it, you might only get partial help.

What Gets Covered?

  • Damage to the car’s body due to water.
  • Electrical parts that fail because of water.
  • Replacement costs if the car is declared a total loss (beyond repair).

What Doesn’t Get Covered?

  • If you try to start your car while it’s submerged, the insurance company can reject your claim (because you made it worse).
  • Regular wear and tear.
  • Driving through water knowingly in restricted or flooded zones may also cause claim rejection.

Claiming the Insurance

If your car is submerged:

  1. Don’t start the engine.
  2. Click photos/videos of the damage for proof.
  3. Inform your insurance company immediately.
  4. Tow the car to an authorized service center.

FAQs

1. Will third-party insurance cover flood damage?
No. Third-party insurance only covers damage you cause to others, not your own car.

2. Is flood damage automatically included in comprehensive insurance?
Yes, natural disasters like floods are included. But engine protection add-on is extra and highly recommended.

3. What is hydrostatic lock?
It happens when water enters the engine cylinder. Starting the car in such a situation can completely destroy the engine.

4. Can I claim total loss if my car is fully submerged?
Yes. If the repair cost is more than 75% of the car’s value, the insurer may declare it a “total loss” and pay you the insured declared value (IDV).

5. How can I protect my car during monsoon?
Avoid parking in low-lying areas, get an engine protection add-on, and never start the car when waterlogged.
